Halûk Sucuoglu is Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering Department at Middle East Technical University (METU), Ankara, Turkey. He was the director of Structural and Earthquake Engineering Laboratory (2007-2018). He also teaches Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering courses at the earthquake engineering graduate program –IUSS-UME-Rose School- of the University of Pavia, Italy. Dr. Sucuoglu received his BS, MS and PhD degrees from METU in 1974, 1976, and 1982, respectively. He was a post-doctoral researcher at UC Berkeley (1983-84), and a structural engineer at Parsons Brinckerhoff Inc. in New York, USA (1984-86) before joining METU as an assistant professor in 1986. Dr. Sucuoglu’s main field of research is earthquake engineering, with emphasis on energy-based earthquake engineering, seismic resistant design, rehabilitation, and inelastic dynamic response analysis. He served in the Steering Committees of the 2008 and 2018 Turkish Seismic Codes as a coordinating member. Dr. Sucuoglu has recently prepared the “Seismic Design and Qualification Guidelines for Substations” in Turkey. He is one of the founding members, and past president (2010-2018) of the Earthquake Engineering Association of Turkey.
